The listed Ringlokschuppen of 1913, located on a former inner-city freight yard, has been revitalised into a research and teaching building with offices and an auditorium. The restored envelope is fully retained — an architectural intervention whose impact resonates far beyond the site. The ensemble comprises three hall volumes arranged in circular segments. The cathedral-like central bay houses the two-storey Innovatorium, a flexible event space for up to 400 people. Into the flanking halls — echoing the original entry of steam locomotives — two-storey timber modules have been freely inserted. The lower hall sections, punctuated by single-storey units, remain legible as spatial continua. The exposed structural framework bears witness to the building's industrial past; its preservation also binds embodied carbon within the existing fabric. All modules are executed as prefabricated solid timber construction in BIM. The 8-metre ceiling height enables generous open-space areas; the warmth of the timber creates a compelling synthesis of industrial heritage and contemporary workspace. New staircases and open flights activate the vertical dimension and encourage informal exchange. Passive cooling via night purging, activated floor slabs as radiant heating, and supply air distributed through historic maintenance channels integrate seamlessly into the existing architecture — technical systems as an intrinsic part of the design, not an afterthought.
