In Bremen’s Bahnhofsvorstadt district, on the derelict site of the former Fruchthof and within sight of the station forecourt, a new urban ensemble has been created, comprising a high-rise hotel, a public multi-storey car park with service areas, and a long-distance bus terminal. In urban design terms, the terminal is positioned as an extension of the railway axis between the Übersee-Museum and the cinema, two buildings that strongly define the surrounding urban space. The ensemble’s components enter into a close architectural dialogue and complement one another functionally. The prefabricated concrete façades form a material contrast to the lightweight membrane structure of the bus terminal. Their curved forms link the different parts of the ensemble and subtly refer to the surrounding listed buildings. The concept creates an open, bright urban square with a modular, parasol-like and translucent roof structure. Public uses on the ground floor of the arcade complement the inner-city bus station and help animate the area. Thanks to the modular construction, each canopy head can be individually removed and re-covered with a new membrane, ensuring a high degree of maintainability. The galvanised and additionally coated steel structure contributes to a long service life.
