The Danang Museum occupies a nineteenth-century French colonial City Hall on the Han River. Beside a broad piazza in this fast-growing coastal city, it creates a cultural and educational institution within a cultural precinct shared with the neighbouring Children's Museum, City Library and Alliance Française. The design is restrained; a wing of slender columns and screens, added to the historic building, echoes the region's weaving traditions. Screens filter tropical light into a quiet courtyard, complementing the former City Hall, while conserved masonry meets lighter screens, keeping the building's history legible. Openness and simplicity create an inviting sense of peace and continuity for local communities and visitors in a rapidly growing city. Inside, a limited palette shapes a journey through the region's prehistory, living heritage, the colonial era, the struggle for independence, the American War and Danang today, ending at a Children's Centre. studioMilou and local partner TAD Architects worked closely to build the museum with regional contractors and craftspeople, using local materials wherever possible, creating employment and learning opportunities, fostering local capacities. Low-tech, passive methods suited to the tropics use daylight, shade, natural ventilation.
