The Doshi Retreat is a place of contemplation. The project began with the client’s desire to create a temple, but instead of designing a conventional place of worship, we decided to explore the deeper emotions that sacred spaces evoke. It is a space for stillness, self-awareness, and reconnection with oneself, exploring how architecture can create a moment of presence, where thoughts slow down, immersed in space, light, sound and silence. The journey unfolds through two winding paths that cross, diverge, and reunite, creating moments of discovery and subtle disorientation. As the ground gradually descends and the walls rise, the outside world fades away. External sounds fade slowly, and subtle tones emerge from the soundscape specifically made for the project. Elevated islands around existing cherry trees offer moments of pause before the path leads through an arched passage into the contemplation chamber. At its center a circular base surrounded by water holds a large gong, with stone benches inviting visitors to sit in silence. The partially open ceiling allows light, air and rain to enter while a hand-hammered brass mandala crafted in India reflects shifting patterns of light. The Retreat is constructed primarily from weathering steel, chosen for its durability, natural aging, and circular material qualities. Through the integration of architecture, landscape, material, sound, and light, the Retreat is an attempt to create an atmosphere of awareness and contemplation.
