The new Faculty of Psychology at the University of Warsaw grew out of a simple question: how can architecture support learning, collaboration and a sense of belonging? Before the architectural competition was launched, the university initiated an extensive research programme involving psychologists, sociologist and architects. The process focused on understanding how students and staff learn, work, meet and build relationships. The findings informed the competition brief and became the foundation of the project. The completed building is organised around shared spaces that support everyday encounters. A central atrium, open galleries, accessible roof gardens and a network of formal and informal meeting places create opportunities for exchange, collaboration and community building. The public realm extends beyond the building itself. A large canopy, outdoor seating areas and landscaped spaces connect the faculty with the surrounding campus and encourage people to spend time there throughout the day. The building offers a wide range of environments, from lively collective spaces to quieter areas for concentration and reflection. It recognises that learning happens not only in lecture rooms, but also in conversations, chance encounters and moments of individual study. The project shows how a carefully prepared brief, informed by research and user needs, can lead to an environment that supports education, wellbeing and social connection.
