A model building for affordable housing and refugees was constructed in the municipality of Schönaich. The concept—inspired by artist Sol LeWitt—is based on a rational, strictly geometric structure that addresses space, welcomes future change, and is enriched through appropriation. Unlike usual practice, the residence will not be dismantled once it is no longer needed for its original use. Its structure of possibilities allows the building to be adapted according to demand. The construction methods were selected according to the specific requirements and define the building’s appearance. A prefabricated timber structure rests on the concrete plinth and is enclosed externally by a steel framework. The thermal building envelope is reduced to an absolute minimum and enriched by generous communal areas at the end façades and access galleries. This creates a multilayered spatial situation with diverse qualities. The timber structure of the apartments lies like a core inside the steel framework. The load-bearing solid timber elements are visible, and their tactile quality remains perceptible in the rooms. Left in industrial quality, the timber surfaces appear unpretentious and pose no barrier to appropriation. The inserted partition walls are set apart by shadow gaps, making the structure of the load-bearing framework intuitively tangible within the space. Private balconies on the north side offer places of retreat that complement the communal areas.
