Grammar Gizmos
Honorable Mention in Design for Impact
Nearly 2 in 5 children fall below expected literacy achievement levels by Year 4 in New Zealand. While mathematics education actively utilizes tactile manipulatives to create mentally ‘sticky’ learning moments, literacy remains largely static and unengaging. Grammar Gizmos is an interactive toolset that turns abstract syntax into kinetic logic. The eureka moment came from analyzing sentences not as static components but as physical vector forces: a subject(X) applying a mechanical force (the verb – Z), to an object (Y). The spiritual ancestor to Grammar Gizmos – Montessori Solids are beautifully tactile but they fail to encapsulate the primary thing a verb does – action. Grammar Gizmos uses action and reaction as the primary instructor. By physically moving the interlocking parts, learners experience the mechanical “doing” of syntax. If the pieces don’t interlock, the sentence structure visually and structurally ‘fails’. The toolset relies on a strong component library: a red circle (subject), a yellow bar (verb), and a blue circle square (object). This uniform visual language scales consistently across four core linguistic contexts: Going, Doing, Having and Being. Iterating from raw MDF prototypes to a final walnut toolset, the design underwent two rounds of desirability testing with educators. This feedback expanded a single prototype into a four-tool system integrated with sentence building decks and worksheets, replacing rote guesswork with structural, physical truth.
