Handheld Patternmaking Loom
Special Recognition in Design for Impact
Our project is a two-piece handloom that collapses the industrial pattern logic of a multi-shaft loom into a simple, intuitive interface. Traditional looms are mechanically complex, designed to optimize structural range. Ours optimizes rapid pattern exploration within a few highly generative structures. Instead of a technically demanding craft, weaving is reframed as a design language that can be learned by doing. Our patented rotating pattern bar compresses multi-step processes into a single fingertip motion. Each bar position automatically lifts the correct threads for one row of a complex weave structure. Patterns are built with a turn of the bar, without heddles, treadles, tie-ups, or written drafts. Oversized knobs and large raised print are user-friendly; interchangeable bars allow a range from beginner to expert in one tool. Weaving becomes an immediately accessible creative practice, expanding access to centuries-old traditions through interface design.
