Hybrid Stadium: Teaching Adaptability Through Architecture This 35,000m2 centerpiece for the Hangzhou Asian Games 2023 Park is designed to function as an attractor and generator of new socio-cultural activities and hence was proposed as Hybrid, merging sports events with a concert hall/event space for Hangzhou after the games. Inspired by the ancient Cong jade artifact, the design translates cultural heritage into intersecting elliptical geometries that enable seamless transformation between sports and performance modes. A continuous network of ramps and terraces fosters accessibility, movement, and social interaction. As an educational model, the project makes sustainability visible. A Superdome renders the space column-free, and reduces material use while maximizing flexibility. Passive strategies—natural ventilation, daylighting, and integration with a sponge-city eco-park—demonstrate how architecture can respond to climate and context. Locally sourced bamboo and recycled materials further reduce environmental impact. By embedding adaptability, cultural continuity, and environmental intelligence, the Hybrid Stadium demonstrates how architecture can be a legacy project; evolving beyond its initial purpose, and transforming temporary events into lasting social and ecological value.
