To architects and engineers, a building is often described as an assembly of parts: bricks, timber, concrete, glass. We learn to read buildings through quantities and performance. Yet as we spend most of our lives inside buildings, we know these are more than just structures. They hold traces of our lives reflected in their materials, repairs, and adaptations. Insieme is an architectural installation that brings attention to the stories of everyday materials and to our relationships with them. Built from reclaimed bricks salvaged from different demolition sites, it presents visitors with digital passports that go beyond performance. By scanning QR codes etched onto the bricks, visitors can learn about each element’s origin, previous use, and the people involved in reclaiming it. One example is the Üetliberg brick, a Zurich-specific brick type produced in the late nineteenth century from yellow clay from the homonymous mountain. Although closely connected to the city’s material history, it remains largely unrecognised. As such buildings are demolished, Zurich risks losing part of its material character. Preserving memory is also a matter of extending a material’s life. Insieme highlights this by repairing bricks considered too broken for conventional reuse, using a 3D-printed biomaterial, and making them a feature in the structure. Insieme offers a vision for circular construction in which buildings are not just anonymous stocks of material, but also carriers of memory.
