Can a roadside retail store become part of a community’s public life? At JINS PARK, an eyewear store in suburban Maebashi, about 100 km northwest of Tokyo, we sought to propose a new retail model functioning as a public space integrated into the community.We first reinterpreted conventional roadside typology, moving the parking lot behind the building so visitors approach through a garden. A sulfurized copper volume echoes iconic Mt. Akagi's colors, sloping toward nearby houses while opening to the boulevard.Inside, a large triangular staircase sits at the center. More than just circulation, it invites people to sit, read, meet, and watch events. With the garden and rooftop terrace, it forms a continuous landscape merging inside and outside. Instead of maximizing sales area, we created generous spaces for people to linger; children can run and play freely, while parents enjoy bread and coffee from a bakery conceived by JINS during the design process, as they would in a park.Since completion, the project has evolved into a true platform for community life. JINS and locals host markets and events, realizing our vision of making the store a daily destination. It also serves as the base for JINS’ Community Co-creation Dept., connecting diverse local stakeholders.JINS PARK demonstrates how commercial architecture can contribute to everyday public life. It offers a thoughtful model for suburban retail, illustrating how architecture fosters both commercial and lasting social values.
