Kari Campus brings education, culture, sports and leisure together in a single, highly integrated public building. Combining a comprehensive school, music institute, community college, youth facilities, sports halls and a swimming centre, it forms a vibrant hub serving users of all ages throughout the day. By merging diverse functions under one roof, the campus promotes resource efficiency and meaningful social encounters. Located between the UNESCO-listed Old Rauma and the modern city, the campus acts as a bridge between past and present. Its human-scale massing and wooden facades reinterpret local architectural traditions while creating a contemporary identity. The composition of four interconnected wings frames a sequence of inviting outdoor spaces and a welcoming entrance square shaped by the natural rock landscape. At the heart of the building lies a generous, light-filled central atrium that functions as a shared living room for the community. This flexible space integrates dining, learning, events and informal gathering, encouraging interaction across user groups. A diagonal internal route reinforces the building’s role as a public passage and social connector. Developed through extensive collaboration with stakeholders, the design emphasizes adaptability, inclusivity and pedagogical value. By fostering encounters, creativity and active lifestyles, Kari Campus demonstrates how architecture can educate by bringing people together and supporting lifelong learning.
