Fast and functional: the new connecting bridge between the helipad, Städtisches Klinikum Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe Municipal Hospital), and the Helios Klinik opposite now enables direct, life-saving patient transfers. The design emerged from a joint competition win by architecture studio caspar. and engineering firm Werner Sobek AG. With a gentle curve, the bridge spans Franz-Lust-Strasse and the tram tracks running through it. A white lattice box girder – illuminated at night – traces a gentle S-curve, creating a safe and efficient passage between the two hospitals. At roughly 80 meters, the bridge harmonizes with the urban fabric. Tree-like tubular steel fork supports, widely cantilevered, keep the traffic zone entirely column-free. Its expressive yet reduced form is pure structure – and a conscious reference to the branching of the plane trees lining the street. The curve and column placement were developed so that all trees were left fully intact. White-lacquered expanded metal panels with variable perforation clad the girder, holding transparency and discretion in balance. Depending on the light, the bridge reads as a calm white ribbon; at night, structure and movement become subtly visible through it. Born of precision and function, reduced to the essential, built for seamless operation at any hour.
