KASVU -
Honorable Mention in Architectural design
Kasvu is the experimental building project by the Aalto University Wood Program 2024–25: a compact 9.4 m² living unit that reimagines minimal housing through a modular, panelized timber construction system. The project explores prefabrication to achieve flexibility, adaptability, sustainability, and efficient assembly. Based on research into essential living needs, Kasvu is organized around a central "heart space," with cantilevered modules for sleeping ("Future Dreams"), cooking ("KJ"), and hygiene ("H2O"). Four cross-shaped timber columns form the primary structure. Designed for lightweight construction, all components enable flat-pack transport and crane-free assembly. Insulated floor and roof panels, wall elements, and exterior cladding can be carried and assembled by teams of two to four people. Kasvu primarily uses sawn timber for its structure and interior surfaces, complemented by plywood panels, wood-fiber boards, and natural insulation materials. Mechanical screw connections replace adhesives, enabling reversible construction, easy assembly, and future disassembly. The system separates structural and non-structural elements to support maintenance, reuse, and adaptation. As a full-scale prototype, Kasvu demonstrates how modular design, prefabrication, and circular construction strategies can promote wood as a sustainable building material while offering resilient, adaptable solutions for contemporary minimal living.
