Katajanokan Laituri pioneers wood construction in a sensitive, historically layered urban context. As the first new building on Helsinki’s formerly closed harbour waterfront, it begins the area’s transformation into an open public space. Located in Helsinki’s South Harbour, the site forms part of a nationally significant maritime landscape. The building maintains a quiet presence in distant views, while its materiality reveals surprises up close. Its flexible timber frame accommodates multiple uses, including a public rooftop garden, street-level services, and a light-filled public lobby. Designed as the new head office for Stora Enso, half of the building houses a hotel. The building extends the city’s grid and scale. It connects to the neoclassical waterfront silhouette, engages with the neighborhood's layered urban fabric, and reflects the area’s industrial heritage. Articulated façades break up the scale of the elongated harbour block. A double-layered façade of glass, granite, and recycled aluminium protects the timber frame, improves acoustics, and relates to the surrounding stone architecture. The project was guided by minimizing climate impacts over a long lifecycle and making the best use of renewable resources. Exposed prefabricated spruce structures made from local timber and spruce and ash interiors celebrate wood’s natural diversity. Outdoor spaces are inspired by northern nature and feature a birch grove in the courtyard and archipelago meadows on the rooftop.
