L.B.S Ladybug Breeding Station
Honorable Mention in Design for Impact
L.B.S. addresses climate-driven pest outbreaks, pesticide dependence, and labor shortages in agriculture. As rising temperatures and humidity increase pest populations, farmers often rely on repeated pesticide applications or time-consuming pest management.L.B.S. transforms a conventional crop support structure into a multifunctional ecological system with an integrated ladybird microhabitat. The design provides shelter and breeding space for ladybirds, natural predators of aphids, whiteflies, mites, and other agricultural pests. Through material selection and a chimney-effect-inspired structure, the habitat passively regulates airflow, temperature, and humidity to support ladybird retention and reproduction. By encouraging long-term colonization of beneficial insects, L.B.S. strengthens natural pest control, reduces pesticide dependence and management effort, and promotes sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, and ecosystem health.
