The LVR Kurt Schwitters School in Düsseldorf is a special education school with a focus on language, serving approximately 220 secondary school students. The campus was transformed in two construction phases into a contemporary learning environment while remaining fully operational throughout the process. The 1st phase introduced a new extension comprising classrooms, facilities for all-day education, a single-court sports hall, and a generous foyer that functions as an assembly hall and multipurpose space. The 2nd phase focused on the energy-efficient refurbishment and spatial reorganization of the existing building to meet the demands of contemporary education. Both building elements are characterized by a consistent and restrained palette of materials and colors. Horizontal larch timber louvers unify the upper façades, while the ground floor is defined by a continuous facing brick shell. At the junction between the two buildings, exposed concrete and a timber-aluminum curtain wall define the architectural identity. The new entrance on Gräulinger Street leads into the transparent foyer, the heart of the school. The double-height space is spanned by a timber structure and illuminated by four parallel skylights, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. Full-height west-facing glazing opens views onto the schoolyard. The ground floor also accommodates the cafeteria and all-day facilities, while a transparent bridge on the upper level links the new & existing buildings
