After my father retired, he wanted to spend his days making sculptures. For more than fifty years, making art had been part of his daily life. After retiring, he moved from the city to a teak forest in Mae On, where he spent each day working beneath the trees with no studio and no covered workspace. Most of his work was made from hardwood and mountain stone collected nearby. Around that time, I began thinking about the future of his work. I wanted to create a place where he could continue living, and where his work could continue to grow instead of being moved into storage. At the same time, the wooden house where our family had lived for many years was about to be demolished. We dismantled the entire house and transported every column, beam, door, window and timber board to Mae On. Only after everything arrived did we decide how each piece would be used. The building grew from that process. Hardwood from the former house became part of the new building, while fallen teak trees from the forest became structural posts. Traditional timber construction was combined with steel only where additional strength was needed. Most of the building remains open, with only five enclosed rooms for sleeping, bathing and storage. Everything else is designed around the way the work is made. Today, Mae On Art Forest continues to function as both a home and a place for making art. It began with a father who wanted to spend every day making art. The building simply tried to make that possible.
