The Muscowpetung Powwow Arbour is a centre for celebratory summer powwow gatherings and an outdoor classroom for the Nation’s school. Designed in collaboration with Richard Kroeker, the structure draws from Saulteaux material culture, the importance of the circle, and the ingenuity of building with available resources. Elder engagement, led by Muscowpetung member Jeff Cappo, informed the need for a traditional Saulteaux lodge with no centre pole. The resulting clear span uses a circular structural system of Structural Round Timber (logs used as nature grew them) and steel rod whose members make legible the stored energy of a drawn bow and the tension of a drum head, creating a lightweight roof that appears to float on the Prairie horizon. The Arbour stands as a beacon in the community. A symbol of cultural strength and renewal, and a cultural anchor supporting prevention services for families. The project prioritizes local labour and regional materials. Bleachers and timber screening were fabricated on-site with Muscowpetung members. SRT reduced embodied carbon in the roof structure by 20% compared to engineered timber. With the site's restoration from agriculture to native prairie, the project is on track for carbon neutrality by 2031. Wood was the material that made the Arbour structurally possible, economically local, and climatically responsible — grounding the project in the land, in traditional knowledge, and in the people it was built to serve.
