Museum of Racha Exhibition Concept

Silver Prize in Design for Impact

studioMilou's permanent exhibition concept for the restored Museum of Racha in the mountain town of Oni in Georgia's Racha region, one of the cradles of Western metalworking, was developed with the Georgian National Museum. Less known outside Georgia today, Oni and its surrounds are the lands of Prometheus and the Golden Fleece: a crossroads where Colchian, Greek, Persian, Byzantine and Ottoman worlds met and overlapped. Most of the 4,000 artefacts held by the museum's 500 m2, whether sacred offerings or early coins, collectively represent uncountable layers of culture and interconnectedness across communities, cultures, and continents and time. Modest and accessible in scale, the exhibition nonetheless illuminates a remarkable breadth of human experience through metallurgy - following worked metal from ritual offering to early currency in a unified design. 3 spaces carry visitors from geology and mining to Racha as a major trade centre, to Georgian country life, past and present. Sombre galleries echo subterranean mines, while lighting illuminates artefacts.
