For over three decades, C+S Architects has imagined schools as the piazzas of small towns of the Italian peripheries: civic spaces where education and community life meet. This vision, rooted in the practice’s idea of Future Heritage, finds precise expression in Noah’s Ark nursery school completed within the historic park of Villa Paglia. The design rethinks the nursery as an open, inclusive civic space, active beyond school hours. Transparency and intervisibility foster socialisation, creativity, and a strong connection between children, teachers, families, and the wider community. A large multifunctional hall, surrounded by classrooms, courtyards, and gardens, forms the social heart of the school. The project combines environmental performance with a strong sense of place. Clad in white glass mosaic with bronze-framed windows and shed roofs, the building draws on Alzano Lombardo’s industrial memory while opening a delicate dialogue with the historic park. The shimmering façade recalls the locally produced Bianco Alzano, reinterpreted through light-reflecting mosaic. A red concrete wall marks the entrance, inspired by the terraced landscapes of Val Seriana. Engraved with animals derived from Enzo Mari’s 1957 puzzle, it transforms memory into a playful educational device that reappears throughout the school as part of its learning landscape. Large windows, internal courtyards, and roof sheds bring daylight deep inside, while wood provides warmth and tactile comfort.
