A sweeping curvilinear volume rises from the north eastern corner, looping around the site and rising at the north west corner to create a north-facing open courtyard in the desert region of Nokha, Rajasthan, India, for the Nokha Village Community Centre. The brief was to create a memorial for Padmaramji Kularia. Nokha encompasses 144 villages, and studies of the region highlighted the need for a community centre serving all age groups. The 9000 sq ft spiral building forms an inclined rooftop garden with two varying slopes for recreation and gatherings overlooking the desert. Beneath it, the eastern side houses a museum while the western side contains a children's digital library. A grass-covered earth berm on the south reduces heat gain, while the building encloses a courtyard with an amphitheatre for performances and social interaction. The ovoid library is wrapped in locally sourced sandstone screens inspired by traditional Rajasthan architecture, reducing heat gain and creating changing shadow patterns. Rainwater harvesting, water recycling, local craftsmen and regional materials make the project sustainable. What began as a memorial evolved into a community and learning space, encouraging people from 144 villages to gather, learn and use its spaces in multiple ways.
