The new Office Building for the Austrian Economic Chamber in Graz by Viereck Architects demonstrates the potential of timber construction in an urban context. As the first building of a new development, the five-storey structure combines sustainability, innovation and timeless architecture. Constructed almost entirely from timber, it stores around 931 tonnes of CO₂ and is supported by a geothermal energy system with 30 deep probes. The building is defined by a clear architectural language, rounded corners and a façade of pre-weathered spruce and vertical timber slats, creating a calm yet distinctive presence. A transparent ground floor strengthens its connection to the city and surrounding public space. Inside, exposed timber columns and ceilings create a warm, natural atmosphere. Flexible workspaces, energy-efficient lighting and carefully designed retreat and communication areas support both collaboration and focused work. Through its combination of sustainable materials, innovative technology and high-quality spatial design, the project offers a forward-looking model for climate-conscious office architecture.
