This is the rebuilding project of the catholic church in Amami-island. The church has been serving as a hub of religious activities and also cherished as an integral part of the local landscape for more than a century. Theproject began with the client's passionate desire to build a church cherished by the local community to preserve the religion for next 100s of years.The site offers magnificent view of Pacific Ocean. The existing church complex comprises several communal buildings, including a bell tower and a priest's house.RC structure was adopted to withstand harsh climate and waffle slab system created a column-free space and the square grid ceiling fosters and atmosphere of serenity. Tapered columns create impression that interior space is expanding outward, and 1.7m-high glazed opening are designed to allow seated worshippers to enjoy views of the Pacific.The freestanding wall besides the cathedral connect existing bell tower and parish house.Around the cathedral, there are gentle hill and walkway for kids can play. We hope this place will be cherished as 'everyone’s place' to gather, as well as to pray.We actively used locally rarely used external finishes, i.e. exposed aggregate concrete and polished concrete to enhance local builders skills as well as applying rich texture on the cathedral. We hope this cathedral, which inheriting our past design in this island, serve both as a sanctuary for prayer and for a place to support locals for generations to come.
