The Performing Arts Centre at Brighton College is a radically different learning environment. Conceived as a hybrid educational building rather than a theatre, it brings together performing arts, academic teaching and student life – sparking creativity, collaboration and discovery. Positioned at the crossroads of the campus, the building acts as a daily meeting place for the entire school community. By raising the theatre space above a student cafe, it welcomes all, regardless of their relationship to the arts. A central light-filled void connects all functions: theatre, studios, classrooms and social spaces. It encourages cross-pollination between disciplines: students from science, humanities and the arts meet and exchange ideas. By making rehearsal, creation and performance visible and audible, the building blends artistic practice with regular teaching into a shared educational experience. The project promotes learning beyond the classroom. Informal encounters and spontaneous collaboration are embedded in the open social spaces in between the studios, encouraging curiosity, confidence and participation. Two Brighton College students even joined the design team in Amsterdam, experiencing the creative process and creating authorship. In the architecture, the project is dressed with a robust brick and flint facade combining historical sensitivity with a passive environmental strategy natural ventilation and abundant daylight, achieving a BREEAM Excellent rating.
