Lake Cauma has been a renowned bathing and leisure destination since the beginnings of Alpine tourism in the 19th century. In response to climate change and shifting tourism patterns, the new restaurant strengthens the site as a year-round destination. Carefully positioned at the forest edge, the building preserves the lakeshore as a public landscape. Its compact footprint is achieved by stacking the program vertically. The steep gable roof gives the building a calm character and an identity within the landscape. The project draws on the surrounding forest as a local resource for construction. Its timber structure is integrated into the architecture, combining columns and panels into a clear load-bearing system. Linear structural elements shape expressive interior spaces, while suspended columns and A-frame supports become defining architectural features. A compact service level accommodates technical equipment and storage, transferring loads to the ground floor, where a self-service summer kiosk activates the site during peak season. Foldable and sliding façade elements allow the building to adapt to seasonal changes and visitor numbers, expanding in summer and contracting in winter. The dark-stained timber façade blends into the forest backdrop, while the thin aluminium roof reduces the building’s visual impact and changes appearance with light and viewing angles. Through careful siting and adaptable design, the project balances tourism with landscape preservation.
