Sagamore North Cottage
Selected in Architectural design
Located on a northern island, this all-season cottage balances seclusion with a profound connection to its natural surroundings. The architecture prioritizes privacy through the interplay of planar forms and materiality, inspired by the familiar image of shoreline docks. Following the land's natural contours, the lower level opens onto a stone patio and naturalized landscape. Above, the main living level is sheltered by a dramatic cantilevered roof that disappears into the forest canopy when viewed from the lake. Floor-to-ceiling glazing dissolves the boundary between indoors and out, extending living spaces into the landscape. The deep overhangs provide shade and shelter, while walls, screens, and guards frame curated views and reinforce privacy. A restrained palette of wood, concrete, metal, and stone is elevated through meticulous detailing. A monolithic granite wall bisects the cottage, anchoring it to the site, while a continuous skylight washes daylight through a corridor leading to the private quarters. Sustainability informed every aspect of the design. The site's gentle slope accommodated a lower level with minimal disturbance. Locally sourced Canadian maple and Quebec granite reduce embodied carbon, while a geothermal provides heating and cooling. Deep overhangs temper solar heat gain, and high-performance operable glazing enhances ventilation. At night, discreet exterior lighting preserves the quiet cabin-in-the-woods atmosphere while minimizing energy consumption.
