Stadtwirtschaft Chemnitz
Selected in Architectural design
"Die Stadtwirtschaft" was established on the grounds of the former municipal sanitation department as a cultural incubator for the neighboring Sonnenberg district. The project had already been featured as an "intervention area" in the successful bid for the title of "European Capital of Culture," and its implementation was officially approved by a city council resolution. After decades of standing vacant, the area was repurposed through targeted interventions. While preserving the character and quality of the existing structures and incorporating complementary new buildings, versatile spaces open to community appropriation were created for events, exhibitions, independent studios and other creative initiatives. This success was achieved by actively engaging civil society actors and potential users during both the planning and execution phases. Through additional open participation formats interested groups and the active local neighborhood were able to contribute their ideas for designing the outdoor spaces. As a result, the project has successfully provided tailored spaces for creative individuals and community-oriented initiatives. As part of the federal funding program, the Stadtwirtschaft contributes significantly to the ongoing revitalization of Chemnitz's Sonnenberg district. It has evolved into a central hub for figures from the arts, culture and social sectors seeking collaboration with the creative industries, trade crafts and the general public.
