Tuira School is a multifunctional learning environment and civic hub that strengthens the identity of its neighbourhood in Oulu. The new building forms a sheltered courtyard together with a protected early 20th-century wooden school, creating a shared setting for students and local residents. The design is organised around a central heart space that brings together diverse functions – primary education, library, adult education, youth and sports facilities – into an inclusive and compact whole. This spatial core fosters encounters between users and supports equality, accessibility and multicultural interaction. Architecture and pedagogy are closely intertwined. The building itself acts as a learning tool: visible timber structures, natural materials and a calm material palette create a warm atmosphere while communicating principles of sustainability and construction. Generous daylight and visual connections to the courtyard and surrounding park enhance wellbeing and support focused, distraction-free learning. The school extends learning beyond classrooms. Multi-functional hall opens towards the park, while separate entrances allow community use outside school hours, making the building an active part of everyday urban life. Through its spatial clarity, material honesty and social openness, Tuira School demonstrates how architecture can educate—by enabling interaction, revealing how it is built, and connecting people to each other and their environment.
