WFORMIE
Bronze Prize in Design for Impact
WFORMIE was a PBL studio at the Faculty of Architecture WUT, exploring the concept of ultra-thin, eggshell formworks for concrete casting. The studio unfolded in three phases. The first was a series of interdependent experiments probing the limits of the eggshell method: What are the geometric and technical parameters of printing with a custom nozzle? How fine a detail can the formwork hold — and how much of it can concrete reproduce? How can CAD mediate between form, material and tool? In the second phase, a full-scale test casting revealed that, despite prior simulations, the formwork was too flexible and cracked under the pressure of the concrete. In response, an algorithm was developed that wove vertical ribs across the formwork surface, visually reminiscent of buttresses. Their aesthetic value emerged only once the formwork was stripped: the ribs had left a delicate relief on the concrete – an emergent detail. In the final phase, the accumulated data defined the boundary conditions for six columns, designed and fabricated by students, which formed a temporary pavilion in the Faculty’s internal courtyard. The studio's central argument is that such qualities could never have been discovered without physical experimentation and the continuous resolution of emerging problems. Understood as a continuum of design methods, materials and tools, architectural education should be structured to generate both explicit and tacit knowledge across all three domains.
