The project explores how to transform a complex urban fabric without erasing its social or material history. Located in a 1924 garden-city block in Kortrijk (Belgium), it applies an acupunctural and circular strategy to revitalise the neighbourhood. Of the original 54 social houses, 18 remain publicly owned, enabling a targeted intervention without large-scale demolition. By building on the existing footprint, density increases from 16 to 31 dwellings. The project restores the original garden-city concept by reconnecting the homes with the shared inner green space. Rear façades become new frontages, creating a lively collective environment and improving housing quality, adaptability and social cohesion. A mix of flexible housing typologies supports changing family structures, including multigenerational living, home-working and lifelong housing. Three compact residential volumes add apartments, duplexes and studios, while a collective ground-floor space strengthens community life. Circularity is embedded at every scale. Reclaimed façade bricks and roof tiles are reused on site, while lower-quality bricks are repurposed in gabion walls. New masonry uses a tested hybrid mortar to enable future disassembly and reuse. The design was shaped through an inclusive participation process, combining door-to-door interviews with current residents and co-design workshops involving both existing and future inhabitants.
